Luna Lake Campground is one of the premier camping destinations in the eastern White Mountains, located approximately five miles east of Alpine in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. Set at an elevation near 8,000 feet, the campground is nestled among mature ponderosa pines with open meadows and is just a short walk from the shores of 75-acre Luna Lake, creating a beautiful setting for camping and outdoor recreation.
The campground accommodates both tents and RVs and features shaded campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and potable drinking water. Several large group campsites are also available, making Luna Lake an excellent choice for family reunions, scout groups, and organized gatherings.
Luna Lake is renowned for its rainbow trout fishing and also supports other cold-water species, attracting anglers throughout the spring, summer, and fall. The adjacent day-use area includes a boat ramp, fishing pier, marina, bait shop, and boat rentals, making it easy for visitors to enjoy a day on the water. Non-motorized trails in the area provide opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, birdwatching, and wildlife photography.
The wetlands surrounding the lake attract a variety of waterfowl and other wildlife, while elk, mule deer, wild turkey, and numerous bird species are commonly seen throughout the surrounding forest. The campground also serves as an excellent base for exploring the spectacular Coronado Trail Scenic Byway (U.S. Highway 191), Escudilla Wilderness, and the many scenic and recreational opportunities around Alpine.
Summer temperatures are pleasantly cool thanks to the high elevation, although afternoon thunderstorms are common during Arizona's monsoon season. Even in midsummer, nighttime temperatures can become chilly, so campers should pack layers and rain gear to comfortably enjoy one of the White Mountains' most scenic lakeside campgrounds.
Directions from Alpine: Drive five miles east on US Highway 180 and turn north (left) on Forest Road 570 just east of Luna Lake. This graveled all-weather road leads one mile to the campground.
