The Enchanting Landscape of Hawley Lake

Tucked away in the lush Arizona White Mountains, Hawley Lake unfolds as a natural masterpiece. Its picture-perfect panorama of deep-blue waters cradled amidst the towering pines offers a respite for those seeking to escape the urban frenzy. Spanning just shy of 300 acres and sitting at 8200′ elevation, Hawley Lake is more than a picturesque spectacle – it’s a haven for biodiversity and a poignant reminder of an ancient culture’s symbiosis with nature.

The Intriguing History of Hawley Lake

Hawley Lake’s charm isn’t confined to its natural splendor. It is steeped in centuries-old history. Located within the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, the lake is part of the ancestral home of the White Mountain Apache Tribe. The tribe’s rich legacy is closely knit with the lake, their stories resonating in its tranquil depths.

The region is teeming with Apache names, commemorating their historical lineage. Hawley Lake, named after an Apache chieftain, is a valued part of the tribe’s heritage, standing as a testament to their storied past.

The Angler’s Paradise: Fish Species in Hawley Lake

For fishing aficionados, Hawley Lake is a dream destination. The lake thrives with a medley of trout species, making it a bustling aquatic hub throughout the year. It offers brown trout, brook trout and rainbow trout in this 8,200 feet elevation lake.

This diversity makes Hawley Lake an outstanding fishing destination in the White Mountains. However, do remember to procure a tribal fishing permit as the lake is part of the reservation land.

Also note that fuel powered engines are not allowed on the lake. The lake is restricted to electric trolling motors only. Of course, kayaks,  canoes, and small sail boats are welcome!

Embrace the Outdoors at Hawley Lake

Hawley Lake serves as a gateway to myriad outdoor activities. The surrounding terrain is a haven for hikers and campers, with trails meandering through the picturesque scenery. In the winter, the vicinity transforms into a winter sports playground, thanks to the Sunrise Park Resort.
