A History, Closure, and Reopening – Reopened and Racing!

Deuce Of Clubs Thunder Raceway – The Early Days

Deuce Of Clubs Thunder Raceway, nestled in the stunning landscape of Show Low, Arizona, began its journey in the world of motorsport in 1995. Its inception was a labor of love by a group of passionate local enthusiasts who saw a gap in the motorsport scene within the area.

The raceway, with its unique dirt track, quickly gained popularity amongst the local racing community. The track is a challenging oval layout, making it a favorite for competitors and spectators alike. Throughout the late 90s and early 2000s, the Thunder Raceway witnessed numerous thrilling races, fostering local talents and attracting out-of-state competitors.

The Closure

Despite its popularity and community support, the raceway suffered a significant setback in the mid-2010s. Due to financial strains, issues with noise complaints from neighboring areas, and a few unfortunate racing incidents, Thunder Raceway was forced to shut its doors in 2017.

The closure was a significant blow to the local racing community and the town of Show Low. The raceway had been a source of community pride and local economic activity. The closure marked a somber period in the history of Thunder Raceway, with many fearing it was a permanent end to the beloved local institution.

The Rebirth OF Deuce Of Clubs Thunder Raceway

Against all odds, the clouds of uncertainty started to disperse in the early 2020s. A group of investors, including several former racers and local business leaders, came together with a vision: to breathe life back into Thunder Raceway.

A special thanks to Brad Whitfield, who leased the track and is the promoter.

After diligent planning, fundraising, and overcoming numerous bureaucratic hurdles, their efforts finally bore fruit. In 2023, the Thunder Raceway announced its grand reopening claiming the new name “Deuce Of Clubs Thunder Raceway”.

The team behind the revival worked tirelessly to ensure the track was safer and more engaging than ever. Measures were also taken to address noise complaints that contributed to the original closure.

The news of the reopening was met with resounding enthusiasm from the community. The track’s first race event, will be held May 26th and 27th, 2023, where a tremendous turnout, of participants and spectators are expected.

Thunder Raceway will feature some of Arizona’s best 1/4 mile dirt track racing. Friday and Saturday night races feature Modifieds, Pro Stocks, Dwarf Cars, & Mini Stocks. USAC Sprint Cars, Southwest Late Models, Modified Midgets, Mini Sprints, and even Karts.

The journey of  Deuce Of Clubs Thunder Raceway is an example of a community’s resilience and passion for motorsports. It is a story that resonates with many similar tracks worldwide, navigating their own challenges in providing a space for the thrilling, high-speed sport loved by many.

Despite its previous closure, Deuce Of Clubs Thunder Raceway’s story is not one of defeat, but one of resilience and resurgence. This weekend, the roar of engines will once again resonate through Show Low, Arizona, a testament to the enduring spirit of the local racing community.
