Crescent Lake in Arizona’s White Mountains
A Piece of Paradise
Tucked away in the breathtaking Arizona White Mountains, you’ll find an oasis that encapsulates the natural beauty and tranquility of the region – Crescent Lake.
Though due to fires and dryer weather it has diminished, it once sprawled across a total surface area of 100 acres, this still delightful body of water at one time had an average depth of about 10 feet was known to reach depths of up to 35 feet at its deepest point. It remains an enticing destination for travel enthusiasts, kayakers, birdwatchers, and hikers, seeking solace in the heart of nature.
A Glimpse Into History
Interestingly, Crescent Lake isn’t merely a place of scenic charm, but it also holds historical significance. The lake, built by Arizona Game and Fish Department in the mid-20th century, is a testament to the continuous efforts towards maintaining and enhancing the state’s rich natural resources. Preserved for decades, it continues to serve as a reservoir for abundant fish species and a hub for outdoor recreational activities.
A Fisherman’s Dream
Subsequently, the Crescent Lake once offered an unforgettable fishing experience. With water clarity often referred to as “crystal clear”, the lake is an angler’s paradise. It provides a habitat for an array of fish species, including Rainbow Trout, and Brook Trout. Each spring and summer, the lake is restocked with fish, ensuring a consistent and thrilling fishing experience throughout the year.
Now, due to the shallow average depth and associated lake weed growth, late summers can experience algae blooms and winter cold can trigger fish kills that inhibt fishing opportunities as the weather turns more extreme.
Fishing Regulations
Crescent is no longer the good fly fishing lake it once was. Anglers will have better luck fishing at the much larger “Big Lake” nearby. Live bait is prohibited.
Statewide fishing regulations apply and a trout stamp is required. The daily bag limit for trout changes from time to time and may include any combination of the trout species. Be sure to check the current laws and limits and have an active license.
Boating is now contained to the occassional kayak or canoe, who might recall the better days now past when this lake was an amazing place to drop your line.
Previous Fishing Opportunities
Specifically, Crescent Lake was particularly renowned for its abundance of Apache Trout. This trout, unique to the White Mountains of Arizona, is a cherished catch for many fishing enthusiasts. Its rarity and elusive nature make for an exciting pursuit. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a novice looking to get their feet wet, the thrill of catching this native species in its natural habitat is a memorable experience.
