The Call of the White Mountains: Woodland Lake Park Trail
As I set off to Woodland Lake Park, I passed through what my wife and I affectionately call “Sin Alley,” a stretch of Pinetop-Lakeside known for its decadent restaurants and the delicious bakery, “Baked in Pinetop.” This bakery is a local gem, supplying fresh bread to nearly every restaurant in the area. If you don’t get there by noon, you might miss out on their best offerings, as they bake everything fresh each morning and once they run out, there’s no more until the next day.
But enough about food—let’s dive into the adventure that awaits.
If you’re looking for a slice of outdoor heaven with a dash of small-town charm, look no further than Woodland Lake Park in Pinetop-Lakeside. This isn’t just a park; it’s a living, breathing testament to community spirit and the beauty of nature.
As you enter the park, you’re greeted by the colorful “Serpent of Peace,” a growing mosaic of painted rocks that winds its way through the landscape. Known as “Sadie,” this vibrant project kicked off in June 2023 and is well on its way to setting a Guinness World Record of 1,027 feet. Each rock is a tiny canvas, bearing messages of peace, others are in loving memory of lost loved ones, and there are even appearances by the Charlie Brown gang.
It’s like a treasure hunt for the soul, with new stories to discover every visit.
Woodland Lake Park Loop Trail
The park’s main loop trail, a manageable 1.1 miles, is a testament to its accessibility. My father, with COPD and walker in tow, navigated it with ease, alongside our dachshund, Auggie. Along the way, you’ll find benches, donated by local citizens, offering perfect spots to rest and soak in the scenery. These benches aren’t just for sitting—they’re vantage points for birdwatching, squirrel-spotting, and simply enjoying the natural soundtrack of chirping birds and rustling leaves.
Woodland Lake Park is a people-watcher’s paradise.
Joggers, cyclists, families with strollers, and older couples hand in hand all share the Woodland Lake Park trail. There’s something heartwarming about seeing such a diverse group of people enjoying the same space, each in their own way. You might catch snippets of conversations as you walk by—kids chattering excitedly about their discoveries, friends catching up on the latest news, or couples quietly enjoying each other’s company.
The park’s eight trails cater to all fitness levels, ideal for walking, running, and biking. From the leisurely 0.2-mile Meadowview Trail to the more adventurous 2.75-mile Hitching Post Trail, each offering its own unique charm. The Hitching Post Trail takes you deeper into the woods, offering a more secluded and serene experience. It’s perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in nature, away from the more frequented paths.
Things You See At Woodland Lake Park
Along the main loop, you’ll find over a dozen interactive signs designed to engage families, with activities like storytelling to keep the little ones entertained. One sign might prompt you to make up a story about your walk, while another might challenge you to flap your arms for exercise. These signs turn a simple walk into an adventure, sparking imagination and curiosity in both kids and adults.
For the nature enthusiasts, Woodland Lake Park is a dream come true. Birdwatchers and photographers can look forward to sightings of Great Blue Herons, fluffy goslings in spring, and even an eagle’s nest if you’re lucky. The lake invites you to cast a fishing line, paddle around in a canoe or kayak, or simply bask in the tranquility of the water. I’ve spent many early mornings by the lake, watching the sun rise and the waterfowl start their day—these are pure magic.
Now, if you’re anything like me and traditional golf means losing more balls than you started with, you’ll appreciate the park’s 18-hole disc golf course. It’s a fun and scenic way to enjoy a bit of friendly competition without the frustration of a wayward golf ball. For those who prefer other sports, the park also offers tennis, volleyball, and pickleball courts. I’ve seen families make a day of it, packing a picnic and playing before settling down for lunch under the pines.
One of the park’s most picturesque features is the quaint covered wooden bridge. It’s a favorite spot for photos, whether it’s families posing together or couples capturing a romantic moment. This charming bridge adds a touch of rustic nostalgia to the park, making it feel like a step back in time.
For those who love outdoor grilling, the park’s covered ramadas are perfect for family barbecues, offering stunning lake views and playgrounds to keep the kids entertained. The air is filled with laughter and the irresistible aroma of grilled food, making it an ideal spot for gatherings and celebrations.
Woodland Lake Park is also a hub for community events, such as the Fall Color Run, bringing together locals and visitors alike for memorable experiences. The fun run is a burst of color and joy, with participants dashing through clouds of colored powder, creating a vibrant spectacle that’s a delight to watch and even more fun to participate in.
Or so I’m told as I prefer to stay behind the camera.
So, whether you’re a local or just passing through, Woodland Lake Park in Pinetop-Lakeside is a must-visit destination. Pack a picnic, bring your loved ones, and get ready to create lasting memories in this family-friendly oasis. The park offers a little something for everyone, from leisurely walks to adventurous hikes, from serene fishing spots to lively playgrounds. Each visit promises new discoveries and cherished moments, making Woodland Lake Park a place you’ll want to return to again and again.
